Staff performance management set goals reminder

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – As previously announced in April, the 2022-23 performance review cycle started on Friday, April 1, and will conclude on Friday, March 31, 2023. Workday is now open for goal setting and all full-time staff should have the task in their Workday inbox.

When done well, goal setting is an effective way for managers and employees to "get on the same page." Taking time at the start of a new performance year to discuss your unit’s objectives ensures deliverables and expectations are clear and both you and the unit are on track to achieve goals.

"We hope that employees and managers will begin to view this goal setting activity as an opportunity, not a burden. Taking time out of busy schedules to focus on planning for both organizational and employee development is a way to drive success," said Christy Helms, senior director for HR talent \management.

Resources

Several resources are available to support the “Setting Goals” phase of the performance review year. Visit the performance management webpages on the HR website to access training and job aids and refer to the Penn State Today article dated April 19 for more information regarding updates to the performance template in Workday.

The timeline

  1. Prepare (April 2022): During the month of April, staff and their managers should be working together to review unit strategic priorities and set individual and organizational goals that support priorities. The Developing Effective Goals and Setting SMART Goals Knowledge Base Articles provide information for developing goals.
  2. Setting Goals in Workday (May 2022): On May 2, Workday will open for entering goals. At this time, staff will enter their goals into Workday and submit them to their manager for approval. Once the goals are approved, they can be edited/updated as needed throughout the performance year. The online module on setting goals and expectations in Workday provides step-by-step instructions for this process.
  3. Manage Goals (June 2022–February 2023): During these months, staff and their managers should be focused on achieving goals, meeting regularly to review goal progress, adding or updating goals and documenting discussions. Ongoing feedback on progress can be documented in Workday using the Activity Stream functionality. Please refer to the Commenting on Goals in Workday Knowledge Base Article for more information.
  4. End of Year (February–March 2023): The end of year activities will kick off on Feb. 13, 2023, and should be complete by March 31, 2023. A summary of end of year activities with a recommended timeline can be referenced on the Performance Management webpage.
